COvid -19: How to go shopping for supplies safely

COvid -19: How to go shopping for supplies safely

I am a registered nurse. This is what I do if I have to go out and buy supplies for my family during lock down.

1. Choose a time to shop when there are few people like early morning or just before closing time. I do not go to a shop where I have to stand in a queue to enter.

2. I dress lightly. Everything I wear has to be washed the moment I return home. I do wear my fabric face mask.

Head of Infectious Diseases and HIV Medicine at UCT, Professor Marc Mendelson says wearing masks is one of the many critical intervention measures that should be implemented as the country eases out of a lockdown.
Mendelson says wearing masks is particularly important in areas where there is a lot of crowding and social distancing guidelines cannot be followed to their fullest extent.

1. A mask should ideally have three layers – a thicker outer woven fabric with a finer inner lining – for example percale cotton.
2. It should be washable.
3. Every person should have two masks – so that you always have a clean one to wear.
4. The purpose of the mask is to protect others against you – should you be infected, to prevent that you touch your face with dirty hands, and to prevent you from breathing in big droplets from someone else’s sneeze.
5. The mask must cover your nose and mouth – there is no point in wearing a mask that is hanging under your chin. It just contaminate your whole face if you push it up and down.
6. If you take it off after use – make sure to shift it off without letting the outside layer touch your face and wash immediately in water and washing powder.
7. Get rid of masks that you cannot wash.
8. Remember that a paper mask has a very short lifetime of a few hours. If that is all you have – iron the mask when you take it off to sterilize it.

Wearing masks is much more important than wearing gloves. If you wash your hands very often you do not need gloves.

3. I don’t carry a handbag – just my bankcard. Handbags accumulate germs. If you cant wash it every time you return home from shopping, don’t take one.

4. I disinfect my hands and trolley or basket handle when I enter the shop.

5. I keep a 2 m distance as far as possible from everyone else.

6. I get what I need as fast as possible. I do have a groceries list to keep focused.

7. I will spray my hands again as I leave the shop.

8. If I go by car I disinfect my steering wheel and hands before I drive home. I have alcohol spray and wet wipes in my car.

9. At home I change my clothes and face mask in the garage or laundry and take off my shoes. I don’t go into my home with possibly infected clothing.

10. The shoes are disinfected in a bowl with disinfectant and water. Clothes and face mask go directly into the washing machine or tub to be washed.

11. I take a shower, wash my hair as well  and put on clean clothes.

12. Lastly I wipe down every single item that I bought with a mixture of disinfectant and water to kill any germs on the products. I also wipe down my bank card and cell phone. Note: If I use cash I wash the bank notes with laundry detergent and put all coins in a disinfectant. Money carries a lot of germs.

13. I wash my hands again with soap and water.

This is basically how we learned in nursing to do infection control. Every step I described has a reason to protect me and my family against a virus like the corona virus.
